  Text Box: KIT CONTENTS
Each kit contains everything that is needed to perform a single test.  The test device, a small plastic test tube with a buffer (20 mM TBS) in it, a plastic pestle to macerate the pleopods (or in the case of larvae to macerate the larvae) and a dropper to add the sample to the test device.

Text Box: INTRODUCTION
The ability to rapidly detect a pathogen in a population of animals that is at risk of developing a disease is an important step in managing the disease process.  Test kits have been commercially available for shrimp pathogens that utilize DNA, RNA and antibody based technologies though they are often time consuming and laborious.   PCR tests are in wide use for detecting the nucleic acids of viral and bacterial pathogens in tissues.  They are however costly, time consuming and may require the purchase of high price specialized equipment and the hiring of trained personnel to operate them.  The technology now exists to produce rapid, sensitive test kit formats that eliminate much of these drawbacks and still provide the farmer with a very valuable tool.
White Spot Syndrome disease due to the White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) is a serious profit limiting disease affecting shrimp being farmed in most countries of the world that are farming shrimp.   Its onset can be rapid and in extremes it has been known to cause 100% mortality in days.  Using a novel technology, WSSV can now be detected using PLs or shrimp from production ponds in 15 to 20 minutes at high levels of sensitivity.
